unimoreThe University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) counts about 19.000 students, including 3.500 postgraduates, 800 faculty members, 13 PhD schools. The Department of Life Sciences originates from the aggregation of three faculties (Agriculture, Bioscience & Biotechnology, and Pharmacy). The interdisciplinary approach that such an innovative aggregation has created is developing integrated research in healthcare, pharmaceutical and chemical applications as well as ecology, environmental protection, agribusiness.

The Laboratory of Organic Electronics (Laboratorio di Elettronica Organica – LEO, www.leo.unimore.it/) is devoted to fundamental phenomena, technology, and applications of organic electronics devices in biological and medical problems. It has been established by Prof. Fabio Biscarini in 2013 and is part of the research structure of the Life Sciences Department of UNIMORE.

Current research topics of LEO are:

  • Implantable organic electronic devices for pathologies of the central nervous system; this activity contributes to CeNN and Regional Network on “New Technologies for the Investigation of Cortical Networks in Humans: an integrated approach”;
  • Implantable organic electronic devices for restoring erectile functionality upon radical prostatectomy;
  • Label-free biosensors based on organic field effect transistors for biomarkers of human pathologies;
  • Electrolyte-gated organic field effect transistors (EGOFET) as new tools for investigating biorecognition at surfaces;
  • Mechanism of coupling between aqueous environment and organic electronics devices;
  • Interfacial engineering and patterning technology for whole-organic biodegradable devices.
